Ruth Ella Moore was an African-American, born in Columbus, Ohio, on May 19,1903. In 1933 she received Ph.D. in bacteriology from Ohio State University becoming the first black female to earn a PH.D. in bacteriology.
During graduate school she supported herself by teaching hygiene and English at Tennessee State College.In 1925, Ruth Moore graduated from Ohio State University and received a Master of Science Degree in 1927. She worked on the Bacterium Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.
From 1947 to 1958, she headed the department of Bacteriology being the first woman to chair a department at the college. In 1940 at first Dr.Moore worked as a assistant professor at Howard University and later as associate professor until she retired 1973. Ruth Moore died in 1994, with 91 years old in Rockville, MD.
