We are 7th grade students on a mission to change the public perception of science, starting with challenging the stereotype that most scientists, both past and present, are white men. We checked our own stereotypes and biases, too: we were asked to draw a scientist at the beginning of the school year, and nearly all of us drew white males. After recording the demographics of the scientists found in our textbooks, and after comparing those demographics to the demographics of the world, we realized that female and minority scientists were grossly underrepresented in our textbooks- and in our own beliefs about who scientists are.
We want this to change, so we're doing something about it.
We are highlighting narratives of awesome scientists who are missing from our textbooks and from our own ideas about who does science. We want their stories to be shared with the world. We are changing perceptions of who today's scientists are.
We are going to change the face of science... one narrative at a time.
