Mary Mahoney was born in Boston,Massachusetts. She was born on May 7,1845. Mahoney was the first African American woman to study and work as a professionally trained nurse in the United States, graduating in 1879. Mahoney was inducted into both the nursing hall of fame and the National Women's hall of fame. Mahoney was one of the first African Americans to graduate from a nursing school,Howard University, and she did well in a mainly white society and, has been credited as one of the first women to register to vote in Boston following the acceptance of the 19th amendment in 1920. She was also one of the first black members of African American Nurses Association. Mahoney, relocated to Long Island, New York, to serve a session as supervisor of the Howard asylum for black children; returning to Massachusetts thereafter.
